Guide to Porto Seguro neighborhoods and what’s nearby

A guide to Porto Seguro neighborhoods and travel directions for Porto Seguro has to start by explaining the main layout of the city. Porto Seguro is made up of two main sections.

The lower city, which starts on the north shore of the river of Buranhem, is the more modern, newer portion of the city. It is dominated by the old Passarela do Alcool, which used in times gone by to be the route out of the old city, further north, where alcohol was transported down to the ship moorings for export. Now, however, the Passarela do Alcool is full of bars and restaurants, and is well known for alcohol being consumed rather than exported!

The lower city is a lively and entertaining place which any guide to Porto Seguro neighborhoods will tell you is alive with much in the way of night life. There are clubs, bars, craft shops and stalls, peddlers selling local foods and drinks, and many live music outlets, bands and dancing.

The northern part of Porto Seguro, the “Upper” or “Old” city center, is the region of the most historical importance. Here there are many colonial buildings that hark back to the 16th century. Perhaps the oldest monument of all is the Marco da Posse da Terra, which is a small stone memorial column that is a reminder and symbol of the arrival of the Portuguese on this continent back in around 1500.  There are many important churches and other buildings in the “Old” city center of Porto Seguro and there are plenty of tour guide to Porto Seguro neighborhoods to show you around these monuments and explain their history and origins.
Unlike the large cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, there is no Porto Seguro metro - but the city is small enough that you can easily get around anyway. Hiring a car is the easiest, most convenient and probably cheapest way of traveling around the neighborhoods of Porto Seguro and the beaches and other attractions nearby. You will find that the friendly locals are always happy to tell you what’s nearby and give you driving directions.

There are several large car rental companies in Porto Seguro as well as a selection of smaller local car hire companies. If you want to save any hassle when you are there, you can book cheap car rental online before your trip.

Porto Seguro bus or Porto Seguro suburban trains are another option for day trips into the countryside and to popular attractions within traveling distance of Porto Seguro.

Another mode of transport is riding pillion style on a “moto-taxi” or motorbike – if you want to take your life into your hands with a motorbike driver as your guide to Porto Seguro neighborhoods!
