Porto Seguro culture attractions you must visit
When visiting Porto Seguro culture attractions are present in abundance. Porto Seguro churches, museums, Porto Seguro architecture and art representing the region’s culture, traditions and Bahia religion are all of historical interest.
Porto Seguro is hailed as the birthplace of Brazil, as it was here that the Portuguese first landed. Any Brazilian school child could tell you which explorer traveled to Porto Seguro, the famous Pedro Alvares Cabral who first discovered Brazil, landing at Porto Seguro, which means “safe bay”.
Some of the monuments, sights and buildings that comprise the Porto Seguro culture attractions include:
- The Historical Old City Area of Porto Seguro – the historical site in the Cidade Alta area is a National Heritage Monument.
- Other parts of the Porto Seguro Old City Center, which has many famous churches and buildings.
- The Porto Seguro museum, a must visit place if you are interested in Porto Seguro culture attractions.
- Architectural tours of the city of Porto Seguro which will take you on a trip down history lane by showing you how the architecture has changed and developed over the decades. Many of the buildings are visually very attractive and it is interesting to compare the colonial styles with the ancient monuments and indeed more modern architecture that has sprung up during the rapid expansion of Porto Seguro in the last twenty years or so.
- The “Discovery” Outdoors Museum, one of the most famous of Porto Seguro culture attractions, is a natural museum covering 130 kilometers of Bahia coastline and comprising geographical formations, traditional villages, rock engravings and other “art works” that make up the permanent outdoor exhibition.
- The sacred art museum at Misericórdia Church, which houses among other important pieces of art work an ancient picture of Saint Francis de Assisi, a piece of art first imported to Brazil way back in 1503.
The variety of Porto Seguro culture attractions is quite amazing for a relatively small city. It is particularly of note that despite the massive expansion in the city and the surrounding region over the past twenty years, Porto Seguro has been remarkably successful at conserving the majority of its important monuments as well as capitalizing on them from a tourist industry point of view. The traditional colonial character of Porto Seguro has also been preserved, thanks in large part to a restriction on building anything greater than three floors high.
A visit to the Bahia would not be complete without a tour of Porto Seguro culture attractions!
