Porto Seguro Shopping: What should you buy?
For Porto Seguro shopping, you will find that some of the shops are open strange hours in this city. While the lunch time between noon and 3pm is not good for shopping, as Bahians do like to take a long lunch break, you can continue on shopping well into the night!
There is a small shopping mall in Porto Seguro, and this is a good place to exchange your currency, as you will probably get the best deal for your money here. The shops are not all that unique, however, and for general shopping there are more popular areas.
Night shopping in Porto Seguro is particularly popular along the Alcohol Walk or “Passarela do Álcool”, which starts to get busy around 6pm and is said to be the biggest open shopping mall in the Bahia region. Here you can buy clothes, shoes, bags, local crafts, drinks and traditional Brazilian liquors, specialty Bahian food items and much more.
For Porto Seguro shopping in the daytime, there is good shopping in Ponta do Descobrimento, which is just 30 minutes from the main Porto Seguro “Alcohol Passageway” – you can pick up some real local treasures and bargains here.
It is definitely worth bargaining with the local vendors. They will often put their prices up when they realize that you are a tourist, and sometimes you will find you can halve the price of an expensive item by skilful negotiation when buying jewellery, clothes, bags, craft items and some of the beautiful hand made musical instruments. Carved figures from wood and coconut shell are a local craft specialty and make great gifts to take home.
To the south of Porto Seguro shopping for local products and hand made crafts is also popular in the town of Trancoso. This town is centered around a square called Sao Joao Square, or more commonly just “Quadarado” (the square). Here you’ll find unique local arts and crafts for sale as well as a nice selection of bars and restaurants for when you are ready for a break from shopping.
The Bahia region is home to some of Brazil’s best artists. They usually sell their own works – sculpture, art and more – in their own small shops or market stalls. Folk art such as this is widely available in Salvador, but if you are in some of the smaller towns like Porto Seguro shopping then you will usually find more unusual and unique items produced regionally.
Bahian folk art incorporates materials like wood, leather, metal and other natural substances. Porto Seguro shopping is excellent for getting really unusual gifts to take home to friends and family!
