Praia da Lagoa Azul – an amazing inland Bahia beach.
Praia da Lagoa Azul, or the “Blue Lagoon” beach of the Bahia, is an amazing and beautiful freshwater lake. Situated one mile inland from Pitinga beach along the Porto Seguro coast, this amazing place is stunning and peaceful. The “Blue Lagoon” lake, along with the neighboring “Green Lake” or Lagao Verde, is situated in a natural crater 251 meters above sea level.
Lagoa Azul Beach can be reached by dune buggy from various locations on the Porto Seguro coast. It’s like an oasis of Bahia beach beauty among the sand dunes. Clear, blue, fresh water, great for swimming, surrounded by the soft white sands of the Bahia beaches, it is flanked by palms and coconut trees alive with birdsong. Small, quiet boats float serenely on the surface of the water – motorized boats are not allowed, so there is nothing to disturb the tranquil peace of the Beach of Lagoa Azul.
This spectacular location makes a nice change from the salt water beach of Porto Seguro Brazil, and children are sure to appreciate the freshness of the water. The lake of beach Lagoa Azul is filled up by rainwater and is famous in the region for its white clay which is mined from the bottom of the lagoon and used for medicinal purposes. The lagoon is not, however, quite as blue as it used to be, as nitrogen leaching into the water from agricultural land has given the lake a bit of a yellow tint!
Out in the water there is a white sandbar in the middle, which has a wet restaurant. Yes, that’s right, a restaurant where the tables and chairs are standing in the water! It is worth a visit just to add that to your collection of Porto Seguro beach pics.
Praia da Lagoa Azul, like most of the Porto Seguro beaches, is not short of refreshments and amenities. Like any self respecting Porto Seguro Brazil beach, there are stalls, and charming beach bungalows that are all set to ply visitors with snacks and drinks.
Activities available at Praia da Lagoa Azul include dune buggy trips, canoe excursions, dune ski-ing, kite boarding, wind surfing and of course the ever present, eternally popular snorkeling that is the trademark activity of beaches in Porto Seguro. You can also hike out into the surrounding rain forest. Vista do Rei, “The King’s View” is a special place that is worth a trip to, where you can look back down the crater over Praia da Lagoa Azul.
Praia da Lagoa Azul beach and Porto Seguro make up a great combination of holiday sights and Bahia activities that are sure to keep you entertained and happy during your stay in Brazil.
